Hope VI Project Begins

The formal groundbreaking ceremony for the Old Wilmington Road Hope VI revitalization project was held on April 21st. The project includes a $20 million grant from HUD and is expected to have an economic impact in excess of $113 million in the area.

Complete details of the Hope VI project are available at http://www.fayettevillehopevi.org

Fayetteville a Hot Spot for Tech Jobs

Fayetteville had the fastest-growing jobs market in North Carolina last year, according to a report by TEK Systems and the North Carolina Technology Association.

Over 2,000 people were working in IT in the Fayetteville area in December, up 22.6 percent from a year earlier. In many other cities, including Raleigh, the number of IT jobs declined.

The Fayetteville/Cumberland County area has seen relatively higher growth in IT jobs due in part to the increased military presence, and also due to the public and private sector expansion accompanying that growth.

Per Capita Income Skyrockets

Per capita income in Cumberland County skyrocketed 60 percent since 2001, the second-highest pace among urban counties in the country. With Cumberland County now showing a per capita income of $40,791 – just $900 shy of Wake County – the Fayetteville area is poised to better compete economically with traditionally more affluent counties, experts say.

The county’s per capita income of $40,792 ranked fifth in North Carolina, up from 33rd in 2001.

Per capita income is calculated as what people earn from all sources, divided by population estimates from the Census Bureau.

Panera Bread to Open

Panera Bread Company has announced plans to open in Fayetteville in mid-September.

The restaurant joins a growing list of national restaurants exploring the local market. Brian Armstrong of C&S Commercial Properties states “I do believe that Panera coming to town will have some influence on other businesses. There are many of these ‘higher end’ restaurants and businesses that are teetering on the fence whether or not to come here, and having Panera in town will hopefully sway them in our direction.

The Logistics Company Breaks Ground on New Development

Anyone looking for a concrete example of what can happen when a Fayetteville company figures out how to do business with the U.S. military need look no further than The Logistics Co. Inc.

The groundbreaking for the $8 million building is expected to anchor a planned multi-use development called Patriot Park. The development is off Andrews Road near Pine Forest High School.

Co-founded in 1996 by Larry Walsh, a former warrant officer at Fort Bragg, The Logistics Co. started with five employees and one contract. It has grown to about 900 employees around the world with annual revenues of about $77 million.

The Logistics Co. provides a range of services to the military, such as training and maintenance operations. It will occupy the top two floors of a 46,000-square-foot building that is expected to be finished next spring. The employees who work there will be responsible for overseeing the company’s global operations.

The building’s bottom floor will be available for lease. Patriot Park plans call for smaller, nearby office buildings that might also end up being home to other government contractors. Walsh said that he’s had some interest in those and that he has a couple of offers that are in negotiations.

First Project Breaks Ground in Military Business Park

Dignitaries wearing hard hats used golden shovels to flip sand to mark the start of construction for the Partnership for Defense Innovation’s Research and Development Lab. The 10,000-square-foot complex is expected to be complete in the fall.

The 230-acre site is in the park on Santa Fe Drive between the All American Expressway and Bragg Boulevard. Earth-moving equipment sits on the edge of the cleared site.

The R&D lab will be the first tenant of the park, which is about a mile from the southern boundary of Fort Bragg. The lab’s capabilities will include the evaluation of radio frequency communications equipment.

The lab works with government, universities and private industry to develop technology for U.S. Special Operations Command. The Army’s Intelligence and Information Warfare Directorate has a $3.7million contract with the Partnership for Defense Innovation to use the lab in support of special operations forces.

Fayetteville picked for new veterans business center

Veterans who have traded their combat boots for business attire will soon have another resource to tap in Fayetteville.

Fayetteville State University is getting one of eight new Veterans Business Outreach Centers in the U.S., funded by the Small Business Administration.

The centers are designed to help veterans, service-disabled veterans and reservists who own or start small businesses by providing them services such as assessment, training, counseling and referrals.

Parks & Recreation wins Grant to Assist Warriors Transition

The Fayetteville-Cumberland Parks & Recreation has received a grant that will allow them to expand a partnership with an injured soldier organization at Fort Bragg.

The $25,000 grant will assist in purchasing a handicapped accessible mini-bus that will transport soldiers from the base to various recreation facilities.

American Airlines Becomes 3rd Carrier at Airport

American Eagle Airlines will begin nonstop jet service between Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) and Fayetteville Regional Airport (FAY) beginning in June. American will join USAirways and Delta Airlines to become the 3rd carrier servicing the Fayetteville/Cumberland County area.

Fayetteville Regional Airport leads the state in a recent USA Today airport seating capacity survey, which studied if airlines were adding or reducing seats.

Airlines have increased seating capacity at Fayetteville Regional Airport by 42.4 percent during the last two years. In comparison, domestic capacity is down 12.4 percent nationwide since January 2008.
